Our oasis in the middle of the offseason, the life-ring we can cling to for a few weeks of survival during the painfully long downtime.
Lots of interesting stories developing but my big blue blinders are firmly in place as I assess potential Jint Rookies and try to anticipate the competitions' picks that will no doubt affect our choices.
Each year I try not to get too high on a particular player for first round as it is so uncertain who will actually fall to you the further down you have that first choice. That said, there is always one that you know will be a heartbreaker. It looks like this year's Heartbreak Kid will be Rolando McClain. I love the idea of adding McClain. He appears to be exactly what we need from the draft. Our defense had a number of issues last year. The biggest ones were, 1) injuries decimating our quality but thin secondary, 2) the sun setting on Antonio Pierce's days as a defensive leader and effective MLB, and 3) Bill Sheridan's all to willing approach to fixing what wasn't broken by dismantling the defensive scheme Steve Spagnolo had left him. I actually believe this last item contributed to the other 2 rather than the reverse. Still the bottom line for 2010 is we have no heir apparent in the middle anymore. Goff did nothing to make me believe he was the future last year. Sintim had flashes and will probably be a very good linebacker longterm, but I really do not like him inside. He will play outside and impress us all. Boley will be much better this year after playing with us for a year and should handle starting on the other side. McClain could and should be the answer but we might have to trade up to get him. If we don't we will have to look to a trade for a veteran to lead our defense. Who's out there? Will have to post on that later on.
The pundits seem to have declared the Jacobs era over and many are expecting us to go with Spiller or even Matthews with our first pick. Jacobs, Bradshaw, Ware, Williams and last year's 4th rounder, Andre Brown should be fine. I expect Jacobs to bounce back and Bradshaw to be fully healed as well. If we do grab one of these backs maybe we could package one of our veteran in a deal for a MLB.
If we lose McClain to another team, I'd would rather see us look to maybe pick up one of the big OT's or DT's like Williams who could easily fall to us instead of a RB. I don't expect Okung, or Treat Williams nor do I expect Suh or McCoy, but OTs Bulaga, Davis and Brown or DTs Wililams, or Odrick would be a great addition for the future or even have some impact this year. It'll take at least 2 years to develop an OT. We got one started last year. We could probably start another this year. MacKenzie is entering his 10th year and missed 4 games last season. Diehl is in his 7th year and is not the prototypical LT, but plays it at the highest level now. In another 2 years, his career would be extended with a move to his more natural LG position. Unless Canty can actually play this year and meet expectations, we don't have depth or much promise in the interior defensive line. Alford and Coefield continue to develop into nice players but we need at least 2 other big talented bodies in there we can depend on. Robbins is gone.
That should cover it for now. Hope someone enjoys this.
